How Do I Become a Police Officer for the City of Pomona?
The City of Pomona is looking for men and women to join our Pomona Police Department as a Police Officer.
Police Officer Recruit is considered an entry-level position. Applicants without experience or who have completed the academy (pre-service) would qualify for the recruit process. Applicants hired prior to the start of the Police Academy will be classified as Police Officer Recruit Trainee. Once the applicants start the Police Academy, the applicants will become a Police Officer Recruit. The Lateral process is reserved for current Police Officers who have completed probation with a California law enforcement agency.

THE POSITION
As a beginning officer in the City of Pomona's Police Department, you will be assigned to a field training program with an experienced training officer. Your first assignment will be to the Patrol Division, where you will perform general law enforcement, public service duties, and responsibilities listed below:

Respond to service calls.

Conduct criminal and traffic investigations.

Enforce traffic laws.

Prepare reports and make arrests.

Testify in court.

Act on special assignments.

Participate in community activities.

Other related duties.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Age: Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment or 20 years and 9 months of age at the time of filing your application.

Education: Must have graduated from a U.S. High School or have passed the G.E.D. exam. College experience is desirable. Lateral Positions Only: Possession of the basic P.O.S.T. certificate.

Recruits: Attendance and graduation of a P.O.S.T. certified academy (paid by the City).

Laterals: Must be currently employed or have been employed in the last six months and been in good standing with a California law enforcement agency. Applicant may qualify as a lateral if they are currently employed in any state other than California and possess a California P.O.S.T. Waiver. Applicant must submit copy of their Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer’s Standards and Training at the time of application.

License: You must possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license during your term of employment.

Applicants must be a United States citizen at the time of hire or have applied for citizenship.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
The Human Resource Department conducts periodic testing for Police Officer Recruit and Lateral Police Officer.
Candidates must pass each phase of the examination process in order to be placed on a Police Officer Recruit Eligible List. The examination process consist of:

Physical Agility Examination

Written Examination and

Oral Interview Examination
The physical agility and written examinations are scored as pass/fail while the oral interview has an overall percentage score that will reflect as your final score. The Human Resources Department does not disclose scores; however, you will be notified by mail regarding your status.
THE PHYSICAL AGILITY EXAMINATION

The physical agility examination consists of five (5) segments in which the candidate must pass each segment and receive an overall passing score. The test consists of:
- 500 yard run
- 99 Yard Obstacle Course
- Solid Fence Climb
- Chain Link Fence Climb
- Body Drag

THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION

Following the physical agility, candidates will take the California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Entry Level Law Enforcement examination. The examination will test skills that are needed for both successful completion of academy training and successful performance on the job as a Pomona Police Officer.
The written examination focuses exclusively on language ability. The test battery is comprised of two components: one evaluates writing ability and the other reading ability. The writing component of the test measures clarity, vocabulary, and spelling, and the reading component measures reading comprehension.

The oral interview is an interview with two to three individuals that make up an Oral Interview Board. They ask each applicant a series of questions and then complete an evaluation form based on the interview.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Candidates that obtain a passing score on the physical agility, written examination, and oral interview will be placed on an eligible list. An eligible list is good for one (1) year. The Human Resources Department will notify all candidates by mail if placed on the eligible list. Successful candidates will be required to complete and submit a background packet.

The Chief of Police or designee will conduct an interview for candidates who place on the eligible list.

Applicants deemed as most qualified may be selected by the Chief of Police or designee to proceed to a background investigation.

The background investigation consists of an evaluation of the candidate's education, employment history, references, financial record, legal, civil, and driving record.

Once the background investigation is completed, the Chief of Police will submit a selection recommendation to the Human Resources/Risk Management Director.

The Human Resources Department will contact the selected candidates to make a conditional offer of employment.

The conditional offer of employment is contingent upon the candidate passing the psychological and medical examinations.

Once the candidate has passed both examinations, the Human Resource Department will coordinate a starting date.

Police Officer Recruit candidates will attend the Rio Hondo Police Academy. Upon successful completion of a twenty (20) week academy training program, the Police Officer Recruit will be sworn as a Police Officer and begin a probationary period. During the probationary period, the Officer will participate in the Department's 22 week training program.

Upon hire, Lateral Police Officer candidates will be assigned to the Department's 22 week training program.

All Police Officers serve a 12-month probationary period. Upon successful completion of the probationary period, the Officers will obtain regular status.

Police Officers may be eligible for a merit increase after six (6) months (from sworn in date) of employment.
