Crime Analysis Unit Pomona Police Department

NEIGHBORHOOD e-Watch Message A public service of the Pomona Police Department

A Portion of Fairplex Drive will be closed near Ganesha High School, May 1, 2008 from 9:00am –12:00 p.m. The road closure is to facilitate the most effective drunk driving prevention program available, “Every 15 Minutes”.

The Pomona Police Department, in conjunction with the California Office of Traffic Safety and Ganesha High School, will present an “Every 15 Minutes” program on May 1 and 2, 2008. The program will be held at Ganesha High School, 1151 Fairplex Dr., Pomona.

This two-day program involves a simulated fatal traffic collision with a DUI driver and the aftermath of a collision. The purpose of the program is to provide an accurate picture of an alcohol-related fatal collision, the results of that collision, and the effect of the collision from the perspective of all parties involved. Our hope is to show not only young people, but, all who drive, that the choice to drink and drive rests with those who accept the privilege and responsibility of driving in California.

On May 1, 2008, the Pomona Police Department will conduct an on-scene collision investigation with the assistance of the following agencies:

• Los Angeles County Fire Department • Cole-Schaefer Ambulance • Mercy-Air (Medical Helicopter) • Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center • Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office

Students at Ganesha High School will be the participants in the collision as drivers and injured passengers. The simulation will include on-scene trauma triage, DUI investigation, and hospital treatment/death. At the conclusion of the collision scene the participating students will then begin an overnight retreat with activities designed to show the effects of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. On May 2, 2008, an assembly will be held at Ganesha High School at which time the “dead” students will be reunited with their parents. During the High School assembly, a powerful video of the previous day’s activities will be shown to Ganesha High students, as well as presentations by several guest speakers.

Any questions, please contact Corporal Brian Hagerty at (909) 620-2318.

SHOTS FIRED AREA OF GIBBS & HOLT

Over the last thirty (30) days there have been three (3) reports of shots fired in the area of Gibbs/Holt:

February 17, 2008 7:00 PM
08-0244477
715 N. Gibbs
Shots heard only – no victim.

March 17, 2008 9:50 PM
08-039679
401 N. Gibbs
Shots heard only – no victim.

March 18, 2008 10:17 AM
08-039878
715 N. Gibbs

Three separate calls came in at about the same time. The callers described hearing rapid-fire shots. One of the callers described a possible suspect vehicle: mid-size white car with black stripes running down the middle. This car reportedly contained two male blacks who were wearing masks. We thank the callers who provided this information.

After some searching, officers tracked down a 27-year-old male who was the intended target. This individual lives in the vicinity.

The victim was vague and evasive. However, officers determined that the victim is a gang member and is feuding with other gang members who live in the area. It appears that all involved are African-American and this was not a raced based incident.

The Pomona Police NET Team will be following up with the landlord of two addresses that appear to be connected to this latest incident. The landlord is located in Claremont. It is my belief that landlords play a big role in cleaning up our neighborhoods and we will actively pursue wihin the law holding them accountable for criminal and nuisance activity.

The Gang Unit is following up on confirming the identities of the shooters. Anyone with information about problem locations in the area or information that will help identify the car or suspects should call the Pomona Police Department at 909-622-1241 or We Tip at 1-800-78-CRIME.
